How To Bowl Right Side Spare? Learning Best Way To Bowl Them Over Is All Part Of Game.

Bowling a right side spare is just as easy as bowling a left side spare – only you do it in reverse. Care must be taken to remember to line up with the remaining pins, not straight as you would for a strike. Look carefully at the group of pins that is remaining and decide which is the key pin. The key pin will be the one in a position that will best knock over the others, should you hit it. It is often the pin that is closest to you. This is the one you should aim for.

Your aim should be to strike the pin on its left side, thus knocking it into the other pins. Decide your strike position. Count the number of rows of pins that are to the right of your strike position. Move your left foot that same number of dots to the right of your strike position for a right-handed player; or to the left for a left-handed player.

If the remaining pins are in a mini-triangle position, then approach your spare as you would a strike. This means that you should line up the head pin and roll a straight ball. If they are not in that position, then rolling a hook ball will give you a better chance of knocking them all over – or at least knocking over the largest number possible.

Many bowling alleys these days have a computer screen display of what shot you should use for the remaining pins. This is an excellent way of learning what the correct play should be.

Never be embarrassed that you didn’t get a strike in your first ball. Even great players have spares. Learning the best way to bowl them over is all part of the game. In fact, this is really what makes the game more challenging, as it calls for learning the right techniques to deal with it. Remember that you can get excellent scores – up to 190 – without bowling one single strike.

Hints to remember:

  • Don’t approach the foul line square on as you would with a strike.
  • Face your target and remain in that position as your reach the foul line.
  • Shoot from the left of the lane for a right spare and the right or strike position for a left spare.

Remember that hitting one side of the pin will deflect the ball slightly so take advantage of this to plan your target. You may be able to get an additional pin that would otherwise be missed.
